Teen dream Craig David came out of the U.K. two-step scene, and he's already scaled the upper reaches of the U.S. charts with Top Ten hits such as "7 Days." On Slicker Than Your Average, David is a pop singer who incorporates as much techno as Motown into his sound. There's even a touch of acid house in the twitchy and futuristically funky "Eenie Meenie." David isn't showy with his clipped, lithe and sweet voice, which is why this is one of the most subtle male R&B records in a good while. The dreamy slow jam "Personal" is about getting pornographic with your girl in her folks' house, but the singer begins it with the lyric "We're sitting having dinner at your parents' home/Some of the finest food I've ever known." That's the thing about Craig David: He sounds like the kind of loverman you could bring home to Mom and Dad.
