Counting Crow Wears Love

Guitarist Vickrey salutes "timeless beauty" Johansson

The Counting Crows left the Oscars empty-handed, but that didn't spoil their fun. Guitarist Dan Vickrey used the band's performance of Best Original Song nominee "Accidentally in Love" to profess his own affection for one of the evening's presenters. Vickrey put on his custom-made "I Love Scarlett" T-shirt -- an homage to actress Scarlett Johansson -- for the first time right before he took the stage.

"Scarlett's a timeless beauty," Vickrey says of the shirt's simple inspiration. "In a strange way, I felt I was speaking for the nation."

Despite his public tribute, Vickrey still has never met Johansson. "I didn't get a chance, with the parties being so hectic," he says. "We were at a hotel in London once, and Adam [Duritz, Crows' singer] had drinks with her. I don't know where I was. The next morning I told him, 'If you're ever having drinks with Scarlett, give me a call!'"

As for losing out on the Oscar, Vickrey isn't too bummed. "I'm not going to lie and say it didn't hurt," he says, "but I realized that a lot of talented people in that room were losing all night long."

The guitarist also points out that last year one deserving actress wasn't even nominated. "Lost in Translation is one of my top ten favorite movies . . . Wasn't Scarlett great?"
