Album Reviews
Eight years ago, Tennessee's Count Bass D was cast out by Sony for crimes against convention: His hyperquirky debut, Pre-Life Crisis, imagined an esoteric, fully live hip-hop wonder world that transcended the generic boombap. "I'm looking for beats/While y'all looking for ho's," he raps on Dwight Spitz's "Sanctuary." Freed of constraints, Count Bass D can sample Black Box and meditate on fatherhood -- in the process, he makes his very own little headphone masterpiece.
