(LOS ANGELES) - Rap star Coolio has signed on to star in indie feature Midnight Mass for executive producer Roger Avary (Killing Zoe) and first-time director Kevin Fukunaga.|

Coolio will play Blue Lou, a Jamaican gang lord in San Pedro, Calif. Also starring in Midnight Mass are Wil Wheaton ("Star Trek: The Next Generation") and Taylor Negron ("Friends," "Hope and Gloria").

Midnight Mass depicts a young man's quest for truth, even as lies and hypocrisy threaten to bring on Judgment Day. The screenwriter is Stevo Polyi, who worked at the same Video Archives store that employed Avary and Quentin Tarantino.

Coolio's film credits include Dear God, Phat Beach and Batman & Robin. Shooting on Midnight Mass is slated to begin in May in Portland, Ore.
