Album Reviews
The late Conway Twitty was Nashville's king of the boudoir, racking up a whopping 55 Number One country singles in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, by singing — and rumbling, and purring — for the ladies. This 1983 reissue is steeped in tacky production values, with cocktail–lounge synths tinkling behind the pedal steel. But Twitty's subtly swinging vocals lend a honky–tonk feel to even the most easy listening arrangements. He's at his best in songs like "We're So Close" when he drops into his burring lower register: "We're right on the verge of makin' love," he purrs, "feels so right."
