Coheed and Cambria's devotion to prog-rock complexity and Dungeons and Dragons fantasia is so over-the-top it's damn near awe-inspiring. It can also be hard to take. Good Apollo, the third installment in a five-volume epic dreamt up by Coheed's Claudio Sanchez, finds the frontman spitting overwrought love poetry such as "With this vial to drink I dare/Only to cry all alone with your taste on tongue." The folky "Always and Never" is a gorgeous brooder, and the metal jam "Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial)" proves Coheed and Cambria can rock efficiently. But most of the time they pump out winding, defiantly unhooky tunes, with Sanchez's wordy Geddy Lee wail always at the forefront. In this time of epic role-playing video games and Lord of the Rings blockbusters, the earnest fantasies of Good Apollo make sense. But next time, Coheed could do with less prog and more rock.
