Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign To Save Darfur  Hear it Now

RS: 3of 5 Stars Average User Rating: 4of 5 Stars

2007

This album to aid Amnesty International's labors in Darfur is too much of a noble thing: two CDs of solo Lennon covers that should have been one. Some stars just pass through the songs (Jack Johnson, Avril Lavigne) or give their all for naught (Christina Aguilera's wrong superdiva finale in "Mother"). But U2 and R.E.M. respectively energize "Instant Karma" and "#9 Dream" like true fans, and Corinne Bailey Rae's lonesome-gospel fire in "I'm Losing You" locates the R&B heart in Lennon's best writing. Jackson Browne's tender want in "Oh My Love" is the high point: one great songwriter deep inside the power and yearning of another. Buy Instant Karma for the cause; put the best of it on your iPod.

Buy it for Working Class Hero, Mother, Imagine by Jack Johnson, and Instant Karma.

And the charity of course.

As would be expected with a compilation of this type, INSTANT KARMA is a mixed bag. Great cuts such as R.E.M's "#9 Dream" and Corinne Bailey Rae's "I'm Losing You" sit along the Very Good (Los Lonely Boy's "Whatever Gets You Through The Night"), the Good (The Flaming Lips' "(Just Like) Starting Over), and the, er...Not So Good (Snow Patrol's wussied-up "Isolation" should have been isolated itself). BTW, Willie Nelson's performane of "Imagine" on the Borders edition sounds...well, exactly like you would expect a Willie Nelson version of "Imagine" to sound. Me being a Willie fan, I dug it.

And everything I've just written is beside the point.

This is a cause of such importance that it overrides what I think about any individual performances on the CDs. Kudos, in fact, to everyone involved with the project. Please get this set, for yourself and/or a friend, enjoy the music, and contribute to a very worthy cause.
