Album Reviews
For her third studio album, Back to Basics, Aguilera demonstrates that the fetish extends beyond her wardrobe. The spirit of old-school jazz, blues and soul inhabits the set, which is divided into two discs: a collection of modern, beat-driven tunes and another rendered with only analog equipment, recorded live and sans samples. Aguilera succeeds in balancing references to jazzbos and soul singers -- horns, gospel choirs, the sound of a dusty old vinyl album -- with over-the-top kitsch. At the top of the list of Disc One's killers is "Ain't No Other Man" -- a zoot-suit riot of a song that, like all the best stuff on Disc One, was produced by DJ Premier. On the Linda Perry-produced Disc Two, the prize goes to the creaky Bessie Smith-sounding "I Got Trouble" and a burlesque vamp called "Nasty Naughty Boy." Then there's "Candyman," which may be a dead rip-off of the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," but it's fun to hear Aguilera play all three Andrewses and max out on coy naughtiness in her delivery of lyrics such as "He's a one-stop shop/Makes the panties drop."
When it works, Back to Basics raises the hope that Xtina fans everywhere might go digging through crates of vinyl LPs to track down the artists she references. When it fails -- as on the incongruous schmaltzfest "Hurt" and the done-me-wrong song "F.U.S.S.," the collection is overindulgent and self-important, proving that twenty-two songs is about ten too many for Aguilera. At one disc, this would have been nothing short of masterful.

Lets start by forgetting her attitude and the Huge chip on her shoulder.
Xtina is great- reason 1 ; the sucessful experiment that stripped was.(which is why most people love her)
Reason 2 ; Back to basics(another experiment that I hope goes well)
I bought(pre-ordered) the album immediately after i heard ANOM.
Yes its self indulgent but you have to give her kudous for entering a teritory that would have caused career suicide for most other bland untalented singers.
Why somone as talented as xtina choses to go beyond the mainstream still baffles me.Mind you she can team up with high profile producers and make hit records that will sell multiplatinum status, like Mariah or Whitney did. You have to admire her for pushing buttons, even if it dosent sell her as much records.
Back to basics i didnt really get at first, ANOM was amazing, but later on it grew on me and beleive me in 2 years this ablum might just produce another hit.
Forget scott socorch(would have liked him to produce one or 2 songs on the album) and F.U.S.S
DISC one is full of good tracks like ANOM, understand, the witty and infectious slow down baby and the amazing balla :hurt( wonderful song, my first favorite on the album.)Candyman is ok,upbeat good for the clubs .. dosent do much for me though(the lyrics are however wicked and sharp)
Disc 2 - wow! its a circus and a riot fest of ballads, thearetical, masterful, genius but not commercial. songs like nasty naughty boy is simply genius; the lyrics right on the money, saucy and you cant help but gasp when she says' sugar below my waist'. I got trouble(this deserves song of the year) - can u believe its original!!, save me from myself- a truly vunurable ballad, a masterpeiece, and enticing it's like xtina is whispering to your ears. The right man blows every other person in the music industry away, the vocal range the notes, the emotion, the drama, its a movie, its a story, its a journey you need to take, and xtina sucks you right in there.. a very personal record .. wow!! |Mercy on me is a gospel inspired one- good listening.
It may not sell like stripped or futurelove/sex sounds or B-day... but its an album you can cherish for ever.. most of the songs are timeless and unforgetable..
definately worth it....but pls xtina dont jump into the creative band wagon again, let us savour this one.. and make the next one mainsteam.
wonderful effort from a talented lady..

I never really had interest in Christina Aguilera. Now that she strayed from young pop and that skanky phase of STRIPPED, it's good that at least one person in the music industry is doing something different.Although, this might be a little bit of a problem.
While BACK TO BASICS is a well done album, it has too many upbeat tracks on the first album and it might be a little boring sometimes. -Oh Mother- is a beautiful ballad and while it's the only ballad on the first disk, it works and it works well. -Hurt- might be an overdone ballad on the second disk but it should've been on the first disk to keep the balladry on the first disk on an average level. -Save me from Myself- should've been the ending on the first disk. You see, the first disk really needs some ballads and even though it goes on its own pace with only one, it doesn't seem right. Plus, if you think about it, -Hurt- and -Save me from Myself- will fit perfectly on the first disk.
If not, the second disk should've been something different. Christina should've done a different project with the second disk. She should know that sometimes, less is more.

The reviewer of this album obviously doesn't like melodic vocal showcases. Two of the best songs are Hurt & The Right Man. Other standouts are Without You, Save Me From Myself & Mercy On Me. The rest of the CD is a somewhat interesting experiment, but the above are the best.

"Back To Basics" is a masterpiece that uses influences from the 1930's and 1940's with ease, style and class. Christina Aguilera is at her best on this 2-disc set that sets my soul on fire and makes me so happy. The stand-out tracks are "Aint No Other Man" in which she expresses her undying love for her new husband, "Still Dirrty" in which she addresses the issue of female sexuality in a frank and upfront way, "Candyman" is wonderful to listen to and "Oh, Mother" will make you cry.
"Back To Basics" is a wonderful CD and is worthy of repeat listens.

I never been a fan of Christina Aguilara. Even though people put her in the same class as Britney and Jessica. I think that is a mistake. Christina is more like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. A great vocalist who sings bad songs without any emotions or soul. I borrowed this album from a friend. The first disc is unlistenable. Even the mega-catchy "Ain't No Other Man", is annoyingly soul-less. When I got to the Linda Perry produced second disc, that's when I started to hear a real artist. The songs were retro without being creaky. I love all the songs on the 2nd disc except for the unfortunate self-indulgent final song. Still, if they release the 2 discs as separate albums. I would be first in line to get the 2nd disc.

The music here on "Back to Basics" is a testament of an artist who aims to be better and better at every turn. Christina deepens the exploration of her musical soul on this one. At times, the album is nothing short of brilliant and other times the listener must wonder what was she and her producers were thinking; however, it is nothing if it is not all FUN to listen to. She captures your attention and the listener must follow through to the end.

I think that is Cristina at her best! In Back To Basics we see a hole new Cristina. A Cristina that goes back to her roots and pulls it off very well. This will be the best selling CD of 2006. She is the best of this young group of singers and to me she has always been the better singer between her and Britney.
