Chevelle Rev Up on Tour

Loeffler brothers brave alligators, motorcycles and Korn

After spending large chunks of the past six years on the road, the three Loeffler brothers of Chevelle know how to keep themselves amused. This year, drummer Sam and bassist Joe have brought along their motorcycles.

"It helps to go take a ride, do something different," Sam says from South Carolina. "There's a lot to do everyday, and everything becomes a project. If you have to get shampoo, that's a project. Any number of things can take up time in your day. Today, we're going to go to the drugstore and then the alligator farms."

Out in support of This Type of Thinking Could Do Us In, which debuted at a lofty Number Eight on the charts last month, Sam, Joe and Pete (guitar, vocals) will join forces with fellow hard rockers Korn for a week's worth of dates in November. The two bands toured together on Ozzfest 2003 and, after some gentle hazing, bonded. "[Korn guitarist] Munky had a thing where he'd ride a dirt bike across the stage during our opening slot," Sam says, "but we kind of made friends."

Chevelle, who hail from Chicago, have an unlikely hit with the Ritalin anthem "Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)," a jab at a hyperactive friend. "The song is based on our friend's first endeavor into the whole drug thing," Sam says. "He was all jacked up all the time, and we laughed at him -- that's really what the song is about. I think people want it to be serious, like we're making a statement about how the drugs they prescribe cause all these problems, but it's really not."
