Charlie Watts was a jazzman before he was a Rolling Stone, and he's never stopped putting his backbeat where his heart is: leading small groups and big bands, packed with Britain's best blowers, in his spare time. This wonderful double CD, recorded live in 2001, finds Watts doing exactly what he does with the Stones: keeping impeccable time, for a compact orchestra including avant saxman Evan Parker and sharp, young composer-trumpeter Gerard Presencer. There's an impish spin on "Satisfaction" among the Monk tunes and Ellingtonia, but you'll barely recognize it: It's all jump, no flash.
