Inconsistent record labels benefit the most from loving box sets. Since 1980, when inspired reggae fan Gary Himelfarb started RAS (Real Authentic Sound) in his Washington, D.C., basement, it has functioned as an always--
honorable if rarely stellar American outlet for the Jamaican music industry -- for every ageless dancehall anthem, such as Beres Hammond's "Putting Up Resistance" (included here), RAS has foundered with performers in their waning years, including Dennis Brown. But the anthology format can benefit such performers, as well: The activist-rousing "Stand Up" may be the only cut by Chalice anyone needs. Though some non-
nutritious material pads out these three CDs, RAS Reggae Box Set includes more goodies than any single release on the label.
