On "American Idol," Carrie Underwood was the country girl who never sounded comfortable trying to come on tough. Especially when she was belting Heart's "Alone," the top Idol pick for wussy girls copping an attitude. For her debut, Some Hearts, Underwood dabbled in mainstream pop, but the smash "Before He Cheats" proved her heart was all the way country; the way she sang about a rival singing "some white-trash version of Shania karaoke" was perfect. Carnival Ride is more country and therefore more confident. She goes for the girl-next-door cred long since given up by Faith Hill in uptempo gems like "The More Boys I Meet" ("The more I love my dog"). She rocks out in "Flat on the Floor," wailing, "You can't knock me off my feet/When I'm already on my knees." But the most fun is "Last Name," where she gets wasted and runs off to Vegas with a guy she doesn't know. "My mama would be so ashamed" - now that sounds like the real Carrie.

I liked Carrie Underwood from the beginning of American Idol. Mainly because she was a blonde and sang a Martina Mcbride Song. I voted for like a billion times.I loved Before He Cheats and now I love All-American Girl. Carnival Ride is an awesome CD!

The songs on this album are about as adventurous as dinner at the Olive Garden, but then what would you expect from a formed Idol contestant? The girl can sing, though, there's no doubt about that. This album doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a rock record or a country record, but that's just the nature of modern country music, I guess. I can see playing this as background music while zipping down the interstate, but as important music I just have two words: American Idol.

Carnival Ride is a ride well worth taking. Carrie shows tremendous growth as an artist and a person on this wonderful, warm, rich, amazing sophmore effort. Her vocals are even more powerful then on her first album, yet she delivers power notes with crystal clarity, and has a soothing, sweet sound at other times, almost like a lullaby. The songs are upbeat and fun, and great to dance to. But there are also lovely ballads, and deep, sad, inspiring songs that can make you cry as well. The total effect is like eating a 7 course meal with dessert, and leaving full, happy, and well satisfied. There is not a dud on the whole album- it is one great song after another. My personal favorites are Wheel of the World, Flat on the Floor, Last name, Just a Dream, Get out of this town, and all american Girl. Carrie wrote 4 songs on the album, and shows great promise as a writer too. Great job! no sophmore slump or grammy curse here. :) This album is going to be HUGE!
