Album Reviews
Caitlin Cary's second album makes a perfect soundtrack for the sorts of days evoked on the languid, unhurried "Sleepin' In on Sunday." Cary's bell-toned alto recalls that of Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie; both women possess a soulfulness that suggests deep reserves. I'm Staying Out builds on last year's fine debut, While You Weren't Looking, exhibiting more confidence and some adventurous musical turns. "You Don't Have to Hide" is a rhythm & bluesy romp with an unexpectedly lyrical bridge. Cary channels Patsy Cline in "Please Break My Heart," an old-fashioned pop-country number right down to the Floyd Cramer-ish piano fills and deep-reverb guitar solo. The album finds its core on several ballads in 3/4 time: the bittersweet, countrified "I'm Staying Out"; the doleful tragedy-in-the-making "In a While"; and "I Want to Learn to Waltz With You," a hopeful song about rekindling a romance.
