In 2001, producer Dennis Herring got an exceptional record out of Chicago blues survivor Buddy Guy by introducing him to the crude, inspired songs of Mississippi's Fat Possum posse. Unfortunately, this attempt to revamp the concept with an acoustic album of modestly obscure Delta classics abjures the novelty, power and vulgarity that put Herring's earlier brainstorm over the top. Guy is a strong singer and ace guitarist well suited to revive Son House and Frankie Lee Sims. The Eric Clapton and B.B. King cameos here are fine in theory -- as is the light rhythm section on some cuts and Guy's Skip James falsetto. But in the end this is a roots tribute done in by its own piety.
