Album Reviews
Like Fountains of Wayne,
Brendan Benson writes pop songs for an alternate universe, one where hits
are still forged out of crisp guitars and Beatlesque backing vocals. In the
real world, this Detroit songwriter and one-man band lost his major-label
deal after one album, waiting six years to return with 2002's much-lauded
Lapalco. His melodic gifts remain undeniable on this charming third
album, which fizzes with a wistful sweetness. High points include the title
song, which moves from folk rock to Bee Gees disco, and the Phil Spector
homage "The Pledge." It doesn't hurt that the Brendan-on-Brendan backing
tracks groove better than those of many actual bands.
