Brandy's new album recalls Janet Jackson at her best: She's a pop star, but she's making the most of her big studio budgets and is following her muse. Working mostly with Timbaland -- but also with the more laid-back Kanye West, on "Think About Our Love" and "Where You Wanna Be" -- Brandy lets her cool voice stream through jams that, as one hot track is titled, "Focus." The music is mainstream soul with eccentric details and shadings. On "I Tried," Brandy stays home, pulls the covers over her head and yearns to hear some Coldplay; appropriately, Timbaland's music slips the English band's black-and-blue guitar harmonics into his trademark zigzags of hip-hop-inspired soul. "Yo!" he calls out at the beginning of "Finally," which includes samples of Hans Zimmer Hollywood movie music, "Me and Brandy have risen to the occasion!" They have.

Personally, I’ve never been a huge fan of the R&B genre, and Destiny’s Child was as ‘gangsta’ as I went. But then one day, I went to my local library and decided – what the hell – and borrowed out a copy of Brandy – Afrodisiac – I now own a copy of this album and another Brandy album since that moment. In my opinion, Brandy should be crowned queen of R&B – this young, talented lady displays maturity beyond her years through her music – an album that shows just how much Brandy has grown – this is Brandy’s best release to date.

Ride the waves of the Afrodisiac album – you won’t regret it. It is one of those albums that has the amazing knack of being able to have the right ingredients for an R&B record – funky beats, amazing dance tracks, solid ballads, and terrific vocals. How I Feel, Necessary and Should I Go immediately stand out from the album – each song so different and so d*mn good! Brandy’s voice has a beautiful, husky feel to it – a refreshing change to R&B’s belters Beyonce and Whitney Houston. This is literally the best R&B album I know of. In the song Finally, Timbaland, producer of this album says “Brandy has risen to the occasion” – amen to that! Brandy performs like Janet Jackson at her best – this is how real R&B is made.
