Album Reviews

With their classic label affiliation and clean-livin' ways, winsome lyrics that invite warm PG-13 romance and the street-corner sweetness of their singing, Boyz II Men echo R&B of a time so innocent it seems light-years away. But their success is absolutely of the moment. Every bit as appealing as their fine first effort, II sets these four strong, lovely voices in high relief courtesy of hip producers Babyface and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. "I'll Make Love to You" and "On Bended Knee" are lush swoon-and-croon ballads of the kind the Boyz' hard-core fans demand. There's also a cappella candy (the Beatles' "Yesterday") that leaves no cloying aftertaste. And II pushes the envelope, albeit delicately, adding string-quartet grace notes here, jazz vocalese there.
