Bob Seger

Seven

Bob Seger has been touted for years as a Detroit-based John Fogerty but has never had the monster hit needed to break out nationally. If he keeps making albums like Seven, he never will. "Need Ya" proves that he can still write an AM rocker as well as anyone, but amateurish production precluded its potential single success. Most of the rest of Seven isn't even that good. Seger has been relying on too many gimmicks — part of this album was recorded in Nashville, which is as appropriate as Waylon Jennings recording in Motown — when what he really needs is a good producer. We could use a hit-maker of his ability, but albums like this one aren't going to provide it.
