Biography

Like its cohorts in the pioneering Native Tongues clique -- De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Jungle Brothers -- New York hip-hop duo Black Sheep approached its music with humor, wit, and creativity. Its 1991 debut, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, is all youthful energy and cocky strut, with Dres and Mista Lawnge goofing on sell-out rappers, dodging homely honeys, and mocking envious haters. The pair specialized in call-and-response hooks, the most memorable of which, "You can get with this/Or you can get with that," popped out of speakers on the classic "The Choice Is Yours." Mostly though, Black Sheep were girl crazy, and A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is rife with bedroom boasts, horny come-ons, mé-nage à trois fantasies, and meditations on fly females. Thanks to the duo's comical approach, the subject matter stays fun and light, and offbeat production touches such as the flute sample flitting through "Hoes We Knows" and the rhythmic dog barks that punctuate "Similak Child" make the album consistently engaging.
