Hear it Now
This twelve-song salute to the folk-jazz-rock giantess is all over the
place in terms of quality and in the variety of the artists involved
(Sufjan Stevens and Prince, Bjšrk and Emmylou Harris, jazzbo Brad Mehldau
and Caetano Veloso). The highlights: Stevens' uptempo "Free Man in
Paris," complete with trumpet fanfare, and Prince's version of "A Case of
You," which he turns into an ace piano ballad. But Sarah McLachlan and
Annie Lennox don't do Mitchell any favors with their tepid covers of
"Blue" and "Ladies of the Canyon," respectively, which verge on New Age
schlock.
