Album Reviews
Following his 2002 success with Solomon Burke, producer Joe Henry teams up with Sixties and Seventies R&B stars Mavis Staples, Billy Preston, Ann Peebles, Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint for this New Orleans benefit album of newly recorded soul. The highlights: Thomas' serious-as-a-heart-attack rendition of Bill Withers' "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh" and Hurricane Katrina survivor Toussaint's evocation of his joyous work with LaBelle and the Meters on the high-stepping "Mi Amour."
