"Check Your Head" made Beastie Boys alt-rock superheroes. Mike D., Ad-Rock and MCA returned to their garage-band roots, teaming with keyboardist "Money" Mark Nishita and producer Mario Caldato Jr. to grind out punk-soul accompaniment to their goofy braggadocio. Some of the album's more maundering instrumentals haven't aged well, but fuzzy, buzzy chestnuts like "Pass the Mic" and "Jimmy James" are still a blast. This two-disc set includes a slew of remixes, outtakes and other bonus goodies, including the Beasties' legendary ode to May-December romance, "Boomin' Granny."
