Though they dress like goth punks and are currently one of the hottest acts on the Warped Tour, Avenged Sevenfold have evolved since 2001 from a hardcore-influenced screamo outfit into straight-up metalheads. Fiery twin-guitar assaults and complex rhythms dominate their major-label debut, but where City of Evil marks a departure from Avenged's past is its vocals: Frontman M. Shadows can now properly be called a singer, having honed his pipes with a voice coach who previously trained Axl Rose and Chris Cornell. Though Shadows occasionally sounds like both those guys, there's no mistaking this band's love for the gloom, doom and mythology of classic British metal acts. Peep the horseback skeleton warrior on the album cover and see if you don't think it's an obvious homage to Judas Priest artwork of yore.

This album is fun and full of shiny metallic goodness, with a hint of irony. An excellent homage to Iron Maiden but stays modern. This band manages to make the listener take them seriously even when they don't entirely. Rocks.

This album does not deserve one star, or three, or five. It deserves a good TEN. This is the absolute best album I've ever heard in years.

Although the band has gotten thrashed about its change in musical style, its onle due to Matt Shadows' change in vocals. His surgery has changed they're musical style, and now they are so much better.

There is absolutely no musical flaw in this album. The guitars are fucking amazing, and Shadows' voice is to-die-for. Buy it, and you CAN'T regret it.

The best album, ever.

Suck it, RS.

AWESOME album!!!!!!!!! this is definitely the best album to be released for a long time. snarling twin guitar workouts like "beast and the harlot" and "bat country" give this album its incredible sense of power. another significant moment on the album is "seize the day",a modern day version of "november rain" with twice the power and emotion. and rolling stone can go stick their heads in a hole, cause this baby SMOKES some albums that they've rated 5 stars!(yeah, I said it. take that, rolling stone!muahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

First off, the cover looks more like an Iron Maiden cover than a Judas Priests Cover. Second, This album FUCKING ROCKS. Although M. Shadows really went soft with the vocals on this album, tracks like Beast and the Harlot, Blinded in Chains, Trashed and Scattered, still pack a powerful punch. A7X have succeeded in encompassing all that is great about Classic Metal and have taken the genre to a new level. Tracks Like Wicked End, Strength of the World, are a godsend for metal fans who love dramatic, epic songs new metal bands simply don't do. If you still don't believe that A7X rocks, just listen to one track, M.I.A. Zack Vengence proves that the day of guitar heros is not over. There simply isn't a bad track on this album, anyone who loves metal or just like good music should buy this album. Although A7X receives a lot of backlash from the metal community as being trendy, wearing too much make-up, being on TRL etc. Get over it, these guys rock. I can't wait for the next album.

Can't believe the vanilla, weak 3-star RS review of this CD. I had not heard of this band, but a friend of mine turned me onto it at a wine-tasting, and this is the best album I've heard since Tool's Lateralus. Definately my favorite CD this year, and one of those great works that only come around once every couple of years. Nice long, developed, hard driving songs; most over 6 mins I think... It rocks! Pull your head out RS! I remember when you rated Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream 3-stars too... (right)... :P

This album is much better than AS's first effort mainly due to Shadows' vocal improvement and the guitar cord progressions and awesome rips. Good job guys and keep 'em comin'.
