These guys excel at the complex, pummeling Eighties-metal moves that first came into circulation when they were in diapers. "Critical Acclaim" is a barnburner built around a half-dozen or so rather dope riffs. Problem is, there's not much else here beyond the deft instrumental assault: The tunes -- or at least whatever M. Shadows feels like bellowing -- sound like the kind of lame, nu-metal angst-mongering that dominated the radio in the late Nineties.

I didn't review this album till I've had a full chance to develop my opinion. Truthfully, at first, I didn't listen to anything beyond the first 4 tracks. However, I've given it a chance to grow on me, and though not as epic as their past 3 albums, it's still a solid effort. Critical Acclaim and Afterlife remain the best tracks here, with Almost Easy, Scream and Gunslinger being solid songs as well. Album sort of dies after that, though. Although I like the lyrics in Unbound (The Wild Ride), I just can never get into it. And Brompton Cocktail is mediocre, at best. Little Piece of Heaven is very good, but too long to want to listen to. Not worth it, IMO. Then there's Dear God. Not necessarily a bad song, although I am a bit pissed that this'll be their next single. Overall, this album is worth it if only for the first 5 tracks. The rest isn't bad...it's just nothing compared to Waking the Fallen or City of Evil. Let's hope the next album is heavier, eh?

I have to give this album 5 stars because I truly love it. I wore it out by listening to it alone for 6 weeks straight. I personally like this album better than A7X's others. I think "A Little Piece of Heaven" is a masterpiece in its own, something totally different for A7X. I have the MVI edition, so I watched the making of the album. It gives you a better feel for the songs, and where they are coming from. I think the Rev does a great job singing, and I would love to see more of it in the future. And the instrumental end to "Dear God" is perfect and touching.

Christian, you are half retarded. Avenged Sevenfold has clearly stated before that they want to go in a different direction with their music. There are many jazz and musically technical influences in their new album. You are a person who can't stand when a band when they decide to change.

So as usual fans are up in arms about the new record....although by now A7X fans should be used to them changing their style between every album. I personally was hoping for another City of Evil because I loved the classic metal sound and feel the album had.

I can say this with confidence, the new record isn't as good as their two previous efforts, but certainly should be given points for originality. Some songs are great, although I feel the the Rev's drumming and Synsters guitar work was better on City of Evil....and some are just plain weird.

The album does grow on you and should show to everyone the A7X doesn't care how they get pigeoned holed in the music scene, they're going to make the music that they want to. M Shadows said it best when they came to tour the new album in late 07, "Everytime we make an album, we lose all our fans and gain new ones."

Ok so I have liked A7X for like forever and I got to hand to the guys. This album brought out every single different talent this band has. I am just saying every song was different. Some where more soft and some hard but, all good songs the same. As for M. Shadows just bellowing out whatever he feels like is just totally harsh and not right. M. Shadows has great vocals and Avenged Sevenfold can put a song together. Anyone who is a true music can not say this band can write and produce something awesome and different every time they come together for a album.

Ok first off, I take my hat off to the boys for making this album. Definately one of their best cd's and its a monster to play on the 5.1 surround sound.

Now onto the cd.... M. Shadows does a brilliant job of the vocals. His voice is awesome! and Syn does hte best guitar solo's! Zacky's rythym guitar is briliant and Johnny is wicked on the bass. was impressed with The Rev's drumming albiet for the lack of the machine gun bass drumming. Definately worth listening to over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again :D

The growth and development of this band has taken a turn for the worst. From its birth in 1999, Avenged Sevenfold has increasingly begun to conform to big bisuness rock. As for the fans, some love it, some dont. Many of the fans most loyal to the talented rock band had their backs turned on them with the release of the breakthrough album City Of Evil, which released in 2005. M Shadows, te bands frontman elegedly claimed that they were a "new" band, and had abandoned their old, more metalcore and hardcore style of music. Withought the piercing screams and earth shaking breakdowns, the band went in a new direction of technicality and focus on melody. Many of the original fans were outraged and felt betrayed. Not to worry, however. The bands new self titled record attemps, but ultimatly fails in bringing back some of their old swaggar and rawness, only to leave us in a daze and wondering, "Why did we ever respect this band?"

Avenged Sevenfold right now is the only relevent band playing my favorite style of music. I am somewhat happy that kids are still embracing the form. but face facts, judging Avenged Sevenfold is kind of like trying to pick a candidate to vote for in the next Presidential election. They may be the best, but only because there really isn't anyone better. The guitar work is derevitive of bands like Maiden and Priest. They can shred, but they break no new ground. M. Shadows thankfully has given up the cookie monster vocals, but Axel Rose he isn't. Personally, I hope that Avenged Sevenfold can be the kind of band that inspires others to do better, or who turn kids on to their influences. If that happens, along with playing a few good shows (they are pretty good live) then the MTV exposure was worth it. My take is that the album is definately worth picking up, and you will enjoy it. That is as long as you don't expect the next "Appetite For Destruction" or 'Screaming For Vengeance".
