Album Reviews
Rock en espa–ol is all about the jarring combination of Anglo pop with south-of-the-border folklore; vocalist Andrea Echeverry and bassist-producer Hector Buitrago of Colombia's Aterciopelados throw themselves into the task at hand with unerring taste and a devilish sense of humor. Their greatest-hits album begins with 1994's "Bolero Falaz," a subversive take on the syrupy Latin romantic ballad. In the course of ten years and five albums, they shed their punk roots ("Florecita Rockera"), fell in love with electronica ("El Estuche") and embraced optimism as a way of life ("Luz Azul"). The two new tracks here suggest a sunny future with lounge overtones and bouncy drum machines.
