Album Reviews
Arlo has finally reached the nadir of the abyss. This collection of mediocre mass-manufactured-sounding "country rock" is unmemorable, with only two exceptions. The first is Bob Dylan's ominous and tragic "Percy's Song," which Arlo rattles off as if it were just another nonsensical good-timey number. Anyone who has heard Sandy Denny's deeply-felt rendition of it (back when she was with Fairport) or Dylan's own chilling rendition will shudder with distaste. The other memorable cut is "Gabriel's Mother's Hiway Ballad No. 16 Blues." It's a long number reminiscent of James Taylor (it gets a little too close for comfort at points, in fact) and is a nice anthemy thing. It's also available on a Reprise single, 0951, which is what I'm gonna keep after I throw this album away. (RS 71)
