South Carolina-born singer-songwriter Angie Stone's deep, gospel-trained voice is a throwback to the days of Chaka Khan and even Gladys Knight, a time of strong women with voices to match and stories of love and life to tell. Black Diamond, Stone's solo debut, features an all-star list of collaborators (D'Angelo, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Lenny Kravitz) and a variety of sometimes bluesy, often jazzy pop sounds, with lyrics that range from whimsical free association to candid expression. "You had it all and you didn't know," she admonishes a lover on "Coulda Been You," "now I've gotta let you go." Stone's Southern country-road sensibilities prevent her from being derivative of her obvious influences; instead, Black Diamond shines with the intensity of brilliant soul. (RS 823)
