Album Reviews

Guitar solos are so back! and Ambulance Ltd are here to revitalize the art of the head-nodding guitar trip. They're a hungry young New York band, but they don't wear skinny ties -- singer-guitarist Marcus Congleton has even been known to sport a Grateful Dead T-shirt onstage. Ambulance Ltd specialize in drony guitar fuzz in the style of Television or the Velvet Underground, psychedelic in that "Dear Prudence" kind of way. But they also have a brilliant gift for Lennon-style pop melody that makes their spaciest riffs go down like a spoonful of hash-laced honey. Their debut album, LP, is a big wet kiss of guitar hedonism, drifting through the pop caress of "Ophelia," the slow-motion whisper of "Young Urban" and the whiplash trance of "Heavy Lifting." It's a little early, but Ambulance Ltd have already delivered the perfect summer rock stash.
