Album Reviews
Allen Toussaint, 71, is a composer-producer-pianist-singer famed for fluid in-the-pocket R&B; his Sixties and Seventies work is rootsy yet styled with rare rhythmic dash and sweet flow. Toussaint's first solo collection in a decade is counterintuitive, offering jazz, blues and religious classics — instrumental pieces from generations before his time — instead of the usual crack soul tunes. The results are both pure Ellington ("Day Dream") and Monk ("Bright Mississippi"), as well as pure Toussaint, emotionally and structurally expansive, yet as keenly done as one of Toussaint's perfectly knotted ties.
