Album Reviews
For this soundtrack to Anthony Minghella's Civil War epic, producer T Bone Burnett aspires to re-create the alchemy of his previous old-timey film-music collection, O Brother, Where Art Thou? Brother alumna Alison Krauss tastefully transforms a couple of ersatz Scots-Appalachian ballads penned by Elvis Costello and Sting. Jack White is given five opportunities to demonstrate his grasp of traditional folk and blues idioms, including Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World." But Cold Mountain's salvation is the Sacred Harp Singers at Liberty Church, a shaped-note choral group that delivers its two hymns with an otherworldly intensity.
