back when alanis morissette burst onto the international music scene with the furious "you oughta know" from the bold and brilliant "jagged little pill", she seemed destined to take her place amongst rock royalty. but over the years morissette's once honest and revealing lyrics morphed into new age, psycho-analytical abstractions. and her music changed as well. the once raw rock confessionals became softer and more polished pop productions. along the way, morissette lost a legion of die hard fans and reviews went from red hot to luke warm. "the collection" is an odd, uneven mix of the various musical stylings morissette has taken on over the past decade. few of the tracks measure up to the excellency that were the singles from "jagged little pill" and some of the songs simply don't belong. take "let's do it", her submission for the film "de-lovely", and "mercy", from "the prayer cycle", both mediocre tracks to begin with that only seem to sound worse when compared to morissette's work from her own albums. and "crazy", a cover of seal's, has been remixed and sounds like little more than a desperate attempt to garner airplay for an artist who hasn't had a mainstream hit since 2002's excellent "hands clean". elsewhere, the songs vary from the great ("uninvited", "still") to the sketchy ("everything", "simple together"). the verdict? well, luckily enough, morissette is still coasting on the brilliant music she once made. despite the flaws, "the collection" fires off enough memorable songs from her arsenal to warrant a listen.
