Album Reviews
This soundtrack takes the easy-listening approach, as befits a romantic comedy about the trials and tribulations of being a "singleton" in contemporary London (then again, one could wonder why more Brits aren't included). It's a mixed bag -- Sheryl Crow's "Kiss That Girl" has a bit of spunk, Tracy Bonham's "Just Perfect" is a wonderfully melancholy ballad and Rosey's debut effort, "Love," is an ode to the subject that doesn't get soppy. But then there's Shelby Lynne's unremarkable twosome "Killin' Kind" and "Dreamsome," and Robbie Williams' equally uninspiring "Not of This Earth." Williams managed to redeem himself with a fun cover of Frank Sinatra's "Have You Met Miss Jones?" and, speaking of covers, Geri Halliwell's rendition of the Weather Girls' "It's Raining Men" is v. fab (as Bridge herself might say) -- but do we really need another version of the frankly unbearable "All By Myself," as performed here by Jamie O'Neal? Bridget-o-philes can also enjoy such enhanced features as an excerpt from the Diary sequel, and an interview with Jones' creator Helen Fielding. (GILLIAN G. GAAR -- April 3, 2001)
